Recordings are shifted back automatically to line up with what you heard, so overdubs sit where they were played.
The offset shifts recordings earlier to line them up with what you heard, and the estimate is right within a few milliseconds on most interfaces. If overdubs still feel a touch late, raise it; if they land early, lower it. Record a bar against the click, look at where the take sits on the timeline, and nudge by the difference — the same manual offset Reaper, Ableton and Logic all provide.
